Yesterday, our opponent’s supporters and the Republican Party of Miami-Dade County participated in a demonstration that included the Proud Boys, an alt-right white supremacist group. They surrounded our office while chanting the names Donald Trump, Rick Scott, and Maria Elvira Salazar. Police responded to the scene as the mob was trying to knock down the doors and force their way into our building.
We would later come to learn the protest was coordinated by the local Republican Party and its leader, Nelson Diaz, who was in attendance and directing the angry mob. They tried to claim it was a peaceful demonstration to criticize the authoritarian regimes in Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. If that were really the case, our campaign would be right out there with them.
But that’s not what this was. This is just another in a long line of examples of how the Republican party uses violent fearmongering, and divisive politics to tear down the diverse culture of South Florida.
Our goal from the beginning of this campaign was to speak with voters about developing real solutions to the problems we all face in the district. We will always denounce violence and racism in all its forms.
We call on our opponent, Maria Elvira Salazar to denounce the Proud Boys, Nelson Diaz, and the Miami-Dade GOP for organizing this violent action.
