SEIU Endorses Donna Shalala for Congress

SEIU members to participate in a day of action with Donna Shalala on Oct. 6.

Miami, FL – Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) of Florida, which represents more than 55,000 active and retired health care professionals, public employees including adjunct professors and property service workers in the state, is pleased to announce its endorsement of Donna Shalala for Congress, citing her record of public service and her life-long commitment to equality in education and access to high quality, affordable health care.

“Donna Shalala will be a righteous fighter for working Floridians and all Americans. Her extensive experience is exactly what we need representing District 27 in Congress. I look forward to working with Donna as she fights for fairer wages for workers and access to quality, affordable health care for our families!” Monica Russo, President of SEIU Florida said. Hundreds of SEIU Florida members have pledged to canvass neighborhoods each week, as well as work phone banks and participate in dozens of other actions between now and Election Day.

“Republicans continue to push their tired economic policies which only result in big tax breaks for big business and deregulation that hurts American workers,” Donna Shalala said. “These policies have been failures every time, but Republicans and now President Trump just keep on enacting them as if trying the same thing over and over again will produce a different result. It won’t. Call it ‘economic insanity.’”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of SEIU Florida, and I look forward to walking our neighborhoods alongside its members as we knock on doors and talk to voters about the issues that matter most. Our economy should work for everyone, not just the rich and powerful. That is why unions remain essential to helping close this income gap and enacting additional protections for working Americans. Workers must be able to join together and use their collective power to demand respectable pay, more full-time hours and sick leave, protection for Miami-Dade County’s living wage law and from being fired when contactors change.”

In their effort to support candidates that best serve working families, SEIU Florida members and volunteers are participating in a Day of Action across Florida’s 27th Congressional District Friday, October 6. Team Donna Shalala for Congress will join union members and volunteers to knock on doors and phone bank.

SEIU Florida, our state’s largest community union, empowers working people to fight for equality, justice, and progressive reform. Across the state, SEIU Florida members provide vital services in Florida’s hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, community colleges, municipal and county governments, malls, airports, and universities.
